Natural Care for Farm Animals and Pets: A Veterinarian Blog

Hi, my name is Risa, and I have worked as an herbalist for decades. I love natural approaches to healthcare, and I don't think that ideology has to be restricted to myself. Instead, I also like to embrace it for my animals as well. I have several beloved "pets" who are really more like family to me as well as some chickens, two goats and a pig on my land. This blog takes everything I have learned first hand as an animal owner, and it blends it with tips and ideas I have gleaned from research and interviews. If you have questions on natural animal healthcare or veterinarian care in general, please read and explore. Enjoy!

5 Signs That Your Dog Needs to Go to the Veterinary Hospital

Your dog is part of your family. This is why it needs special care and attention, just like any other family member. While vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups are important, there are different things you should look out for between visits. Here are 5 signs that you should take your dog to the veterinary hospital.

Your Dog Has Odd Eating Habits

It's not abnormal for your dog to skip a meal or at a maximum, two meals. This is especially the case if it's very hot outside. However, continuous skipping of meals is a clear red flag. If your dog goes two days without eating, you should definitely take them to the veterinary hospital.

Some diseases cause the dog to develop unusual feeding habits. In fact, the warning sign goes both ways. If your usually well-behaved dog starts to raid your pantry and eat everything, you should visit a veterinary hospital for a check-up.

Excessively Thirsty

Just like food, it's important that you monitor the amount of water your dog drinks every day. This will allow you to notice when the water intake grows or reduces significantly, and requires the attention of a veterinarian.

For example, a dog that drinks more water than usual could be developing diabetes and kidney disease. You can tell if your dog is drinking too much water if you refill the water bowl much more than normal, or if they are constantly passing an excessive urine amount.

A Rough or Dry Coat

Your dog's coat should be shiny, rich, thick and soft. If the dog's coat is dull, rough or dry or you notice bald spots, then your dog is definitely not all right. It could be a result of getting the wrong food, allergic reactions or a skin disease. Either way, if your dog has a questionable coat, you should make that trip to the veterinary hospital.

Your Dog Is Sluggish and Tired

Lethargy is a warning sign that your dog is not okay. A lethargic dog could be disinterested in going for a walk, playing or doing things they usually enjoy. While normal fatigue and sore muscles can be a result of high temperatures, if the symptoms persist for more than two days, you definitely need to take them to a veterinary hospital.

Excessive Unexplained Vomiting

Vomiting is quite normal for dogs. Animals vomit to get rid of anything that doesn't agree with them. However, some vomiting should alert you to something more serious. Take your dog to the veterinary hospital if the dog vomits frequently or a number of times in a row, if the dog vomits blood or if they're showing signs of a fever. Left unattended, severe vomiting could result in diarrhoea or dehydration.

Since your dog can't champion for themselves, you need to stay completely alert. Take them to the veterinarian hospital if you notice these or other unusual reactions and behaviours.
